Abruzzo...
...history, art, nature, food & wine - in the heart of Italy!
- The Abruzzo region is part of central Italy and is situated between the Apennines in the west and the Adriatic Sea in the east
- The region comprises four provinces l'Aquila, Chieti, Teramo and Pescara. Abruzzo is one of the most thinly populated, unspoilt regions of the Italian peninsula, and has so far been spared by mass tourism. Its landscape is very diverse with mountainous territory, including the majestic peaks of the Gran Sasso group, valleys and lakes
- The region has a beautiful coastline, with sandy beaches in the north and shores characterised by rocks and cliffs towards the south
- The geographical diversity is reflected in its cuisine, Abruzzo cooks have long been considered Italy's best because at Villa St. Maria, in the XVI century, Prince Caracciolo inaugurated a school for cooks. Still today, the towns cooks are sent all over the world and every year in October, the Festival of the Cooks takes place in the town
- The region is famous for its wealth of castles and medieval towns, as well as its numerous national parks, extending over a third of the region's territory, rich in woods, waterfalls, flora and fauna (Parco Nazionale della Majella, Parco Nazionale Sirente Velino, Parco Nazionale del Gran Sasso and Parco Nazionale d' Abruzzo)
- The 'Grotte di Stiffe' are one of Italy's most famous caves, only 21 km from L'Aquila and definitely worth a visit - www.grottestiffe.it
- "Montepulciano" one of the most famous and popular Italian wines is produced in Abruzzo, a visit to the "Zaccagnini" vineyard and winery (only 45 minutes from San Donato) is highly recommended - www.zaccagninivini.it
- Abruzzo is an all year round region offering sun, sea and beaches in the summer and skiing in the winter. For more information see http://www.regione.abruzzo.it/turismo/en/index.html
